Praying together as a couple is one of those things almost every Christian marriage book recommends and almost no couple finds easy to actually do. It can feel awkward, exposing, or just logistically hard to remember on an ordinary Tuesday. If that's you, you're not unusual — you're just human, and this is worth trying anyway.

Why praying together matters more than praying well

There's no elegant version of this that's required. A prayer doesn't need beautiful language, doesn't need to cover every concern on your heart, doesn't need to sound like anyone else's prayer you've ever heard. What matters is two people, however briefly, turning together toward the same center instead of only toward each other.

"Where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them." Matthew 18:20

A short prayer to start with

If you don't know where to begin, borrow this one — out loud, together, even for thirty seconds before sleep:

Lord, thank You for this marriage and for each other. Forgive us for the ways we've leaned on ourselves instead of You today. Teach us to see each other the way You see us. Keep us close to You, and close to each other, tonight and tomorrow. Amen.

How to actually start, tonight

Pick a moment that already exists in your day rather than inventing a new one — before sleep, before a meal, in the car before you both walk into a long day. Keep it to a sentence or two at first. Don't wait until you feel ready or until the words feel right; readiness tends to follow the habit rather than precede it. And if it feels stiff for the first several tries, that's completely normal — most meaningful habits do, before they become simply part of how a home breathes.

Where this goes next

If a short, weekly prompt would help this actually stick, that's exactly what the prayer signup on this site is for — one small nudge a week, nothing more, toward keeping Christ genuinely in the middle of an ordinary marriage.
